Matariki

Matariki is the Maori name for the Pleiades star cluster. Rising in late May or early June the appearance of the Matariki stars above the horizon marks the beginning of the Maori new year. Phoenix Lane2

The 2017 Street Prints Mauao event saw Mayo create one of his signature murals down Phoenix Lane in Mt Maunganui. Mayo (Benjamin Laukis) is an Australian street and tattoo artist with a very distinctive calligraphic style as shown in this mural.

Crocs

In 2018 Natasha Vermeulen (Nat From the Mill) returned to the Taupo Graffiato street art festival to add another of her colourful murals to the town. The mural has a hidden eco message, the crocodiles being an excellent example of energy efficiency in nature, an example that humans should aspire to.

Avondale Art Park

The Avondale Art Park is an initiative to bring art into the public spaces in the Avondale community. It provides a space for local and international artists to showcase their Graffiti writing as a legitimate artform, to provide aspiring graffiti artists a forum to go beyond tagging and vandalism. Ridgeway Dr

On this Chorus cabinet found on Ridgeway Dr in Kamo, artist Sarah Adam has captured the beauty of Otuihau (Whangarei Falls). The easily accessible 26 metre high waterfall cascades vertically over basalt cliffs and makes a great spot to experience some natural NZ bush on a gentle circular walking track. Pennyfarthing Pennyfarthing Pennyfarthing

The steampunk-themed playground in the rejuvenated Oamaru Harbour has become a popular much loved destination for locals and tourists alike. Split

Split by Marte Szirmay is part of the Wallace Arts Trust collection housed at the Pah Homestead in Three Kings, Auckland. The sculpture is made from sand cast bronze and was one of a series of sculptures in her Earthquake series that includes Torn, Fused, Spill and Jolt. Marte Szirmay is a highly recognised Auckland sculptor, born in Hungary she arrived in NZ at the age of eleven. After graduating from the Elam School of Fine Arts she went on to a successful career in the arts and later as an art and art history teacher.

Reverend Katterns Ostriches Reverend Katterns Ostriches Reverend Katterns Ostriches

This mural on Main Rd, Katikati depicts escaped ostriches causing havoc in the town. In 1897 Reverend W Katterns began farming ostriches and found the enterprise quite lucrative. Feathers plucked from the birds were a fashion item of the time and fetched a good price on the local market, young birds from his flock were also sold as far afield as Sydney. However the only problem, as this mural shows, was the birds would often escape their enclosure and make their way into town. The mural was painted in 1992 by Malcolm Pitkeathly

Hot Rod Hot Rod Hot Rod

This little hot rod sculpture on Whitaker St in Te Aroha was made entirely with scrap metal parts by Adrian Worsley (Adrian Worsley Gallery). Adrians' bike stand and drinking fountain sculptures are dotted around the Waikato town of Te Aroha where you can also find his gallery which contains a vast array of spare parts and scrap metal just waiting to be transformed into the next sculptural masterpiece.

Flock of Kotuku

A beautiful new mural in Otahuhu shows a flock of the native White Heron or Kotuku. The Kotuku is a rarely seen native bird with the national population being only 150 - 200 individuals and only one known breeding site. The photo of the mural was kindly supplied to us by the artist Ares Artifex

Clapham Clock Museum

Claphams National Clock Museum in Whangarei showcases historic clocks, watches and animated timepieces in one of the largest collections of clocks in the Southern Hemisphere. The museum is located in the Whangarei Town Basin on Dent Street. This mural by Spike was painted on the outside wall of the museum in 2012.

By the taxi stand off Clive Square in Napier you will find this pair of aging murals by an unknown artist. Presumably they show a view into the gardens of Clive Square.

Waipu Cove Waipu Cove Waipu Cove

As far as toilet block murals go this example at Waipu Cove has to be the most magnificent and detailed we have found to date. Painted by Dan Mills with assistance by Katerina Nyilasova the mural which wraps all the way around the toilet presents all aspects of life at the cove from early history through European settlement to current day activities. The artists have included a number of captions across the mural to inform the viewer of the local history, they have also ensured that the local fauna gets a mention as the critically endangered Fairy Tern nests nearby. With the mural being so large we have provided this slideshow to enjoy, this includes both day time photos as well as excellent night photography by shadows_surgeon.

Walls Lane

George Rose, a Melbourne based mural artist, joined the crew at Street Prints in Mt Maunganui to create this colourful fishy wall. You can find this inspiring piece of art on a wall between Nikau Crescent and Walls Lane.

Nga Tohu Marama

Well known for his bus stop murals around Hamilton and more recently Ohaupo, Jeremy Shirley's works also extends to sculpture. This piece, made up of seven coloured icons, is called Nga Tohu Marama and can be found on Oranga Lake in the grounds of the University of Waikato.

Onehunga Mall

Outside the Onehunga Police Station on Onehunga Mall artist Bobby MacDonald in collaboration with local youth community group The 312 Hub have created a new mural incorporating imagery from the Onehunga and Maungakiekie areas. The mural is just the beginning of a revitalisation project for the Onehunga Town Centre.

This Chorus cabinet by Distranged Design (Jacob Root) recreates a well known photo of New Zealand adventurer Sir Edmund Hillary. The cabinet is located on Lake Terrace in the Christchurch suburb of Burwood.

This mural on the toilet block on Constable Rd in Waiuku was painted by artist Brigita Bell (Manabell Design). Her design incorporates a wonderful take on the public facility and is sure to draw attention from all passersby.

Reid's Carving

This waharoa known as Reid's Carving was created by master carver Tene Waitere in 1927/28. The waharoa, found on the Taupo lake front on Tongariro Road, forms part of a larger collection of carvings held at the Taupo Museum. Together the carvings commemorate the descendants of the Tuhourangi and Ngati Tuwharetoa tribes of the Rotorua and Taupo districts. The collection was gifted to the Taupo District by George Reid after his wife Ruihi Rongoheikume Reid passed away in 1960.

They do cut down the poles that hold up the sky

The Hotere Garden Oputae in Port Chalmers is a secret garden found on top of the Port Chalmers Flagstaff lookout, it was created in 2005 by Ralph Hotere who is regarded as one of New Zealands most important artists. This 1989 piece 'They do cut down the poles that hold up the sky' by Shona Rapira Davies is one of four sculptures found at the garden. Shona Rapira Davies is a painter and sculptor well known for her sculptural installations the most notable being the ceramic tile landscape sculpture in Te Aro Park, Wellington.

Mana Tangata, Mana Moana, Mana Atua, Mana Whenua

This mural called 'Mana Tangata, Mana Moana, Mana Atua, Mana Whenua' was commissioned in 2017 to decorate the walls of the new pump station in Memorial Park, Tauranga. The mural, created by Te Tuhi Mareikura Collective artists Julie Paama-Pengelly, Kereama Taepa, Tracey Tawhiao and Reweti Arapere, wraps around the pump house with each artist contributing in their signature style, this side depicts three kumara diggers which represent the three iwi of Tauranga Moana.

Britomart Place Britomart Place Britomart Place

If you have wandered around the Britomart precinct in downtown Auckland you may have passed this installation at some point, perhaps without even noticing it. The colourful creation is the work of Sara Hughes, a leading New Zealand painter and installation artist who has several large scale art installations around Auckland.
