This wall at the Justice and Emergency Services Precinct in Christchurch was designed and painted by Wellington artist Chimp (aka Ash Sisson) in 2018. In 2017 Gisborne hosted the Beijing Olympic Sculpture Exhibition, a collection of 110 sporting themed sculptures. After the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games this sculpture, called Evolution, was gifted to the city of Gisborne. Designed by Guangong Zengkang Lu the sculpture takes its inspiration from the sculptures of ancient Athens.

This bus stop mural located on Portobello Rd at Edwards bay celebrates the ecology of nearby Titeremoana (Pudding Island) situated just off the coast in Otago Harbour. The mural displaying aa range of flora and fauna found on the island was painted by local artist Claire Rye (@claireryeart) and was assisted by student artist Holly Bettis. This sculpture is based off the legend of the beautiful maiden who lived in the sea off the coast of Napier. Pania of the Reef was unveiled in 1954 by then Prime Minister Sidney Holland. A photograph of Mei Irihapiti Robin who was at the time a student at Hukarere Girls College was used to create the likeness of the legendary maiden, this was used to create a clay model by the Italian Marble Company of Carrara in Carrara, Italy which was it turn used to create the 1.5 metre bronze statue.

Richard E Byrd was an American polar explorer and pioneering aviator who used New Zealand as a base for his various Antarctic expeditions. This memorial, which can be found just below the summit of Mt Victoria in Wellington, was designed to take the form of a polar tent at the front centre of which is a bust of Richard Byrd. When it was unveiled to the public in 1962 the sides of the tent were cover in white stucco however the memorial was renovated in the early 1990's with the stucco replaced by ceramic tiles depicting auroras, the tiles were designed by artist Doreen Blumhardt.

in 2018 New Zealand Korean artist was commissioned by the Nelson Sculture Trust to create this multi-coloured artwork. Made from cast aluminium the sculpture represents ideas as connected bubbles, the inspiration drawn from its location outside the Richmond Public Library.

The impressive photo was sent to us by Mike Crowther. The mural is by Mr G Hoete and can be found on the wall of the Ngaruawahia Squash Club on the banks of the Waikato River near the confluence of the Waipa River.

Art nouveau bromeliad is a reasonably recent @chorusnz cabinet painted by @paulxwalsh. It can be found near the top of Carlton Gore Rd in front of some Art Deco apartments and opposite the Auckland Domain.

Found in the Tauranga suburb of Fraser Cove this @chorusnz painted cabinet is one to hunt out and appreciate the artwork in person, when you do make sure you check out both sides. Alex McLeod was painted on one side an almost photorealistic image of a crayfish and on the reverse side a polar opposite cartoon representation, both of which are sure to delight.

This massive mural on the exterior of the National Aquarium of New Zealand on Marine Parade in Napier was painted by local artist Cinzah Merkins and Canadian muralist Jason Botkin. The mural was created as part of the 2016 Napier Seawalls festival that saw a total of 29 murals painted in the span of five days. This mural celebrates the coastal evnrionment of New Zealand and features the entangled bodies of a longfin eel and an octopus covered in traditional Maori Ta Moko

The Brooklyn Community Centre in Wellington owned, run and maintained by the Brooklyn Community Association. In 2016 Wellington artist Ellen Coup helped to facilitate the painting of this mural with the help of Kay Miller and children from the Ridgway After SChool Arts Class.

The Adze that Creates Pathways is a new artwork by Derek Lardelli outside the HB Williams Memorial Library in Gisborne featuring three 4m tall toki (a Maori axe). Sir Derek Arana Te Ahi Lardelli (KNZM) is a New Zealand carver, graphic designer and tattoo artist who was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2008 and elevated to a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2020 for services to the Maori arts.

Auckland artist Paul Walsh painted this mural called 51 flowers in September 2019 to memorialise the victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks. The mural is a bouquet of white flowers, roses, tulips and more painted in a Persian Mandala pattern. The artwork can be found on the side of Pomeroy's Old Brewery Inn in Kilmore St, Christchurch. On the side of the 4 square supermarket in Ohope Beach is this dramatic mural of a surfer at the beach. The painting is by an artist unknown to us so do drop us a line if you know anything about the talented individual responsible.

Well known father and son Dick and Otis Frizzell team up for this mural just off Dominion Rd in Mt Eden. The mural was painted to promote Auckland's Dominion Rd as a World within a Street as it has a wealth of cuisine and retail offerings from a variety of countries around the world.

This mural was painted by American artist Noelle C Anderson for the 2016 Napier Seawalls festival. For her mural the artists depicts sharks in a beautiful and positive way as too often sharks are portrayed as menacing and dangerous. With over 100 million sharks killed each year perhaps the sharks think of us as the danger.

Oxford is a small town in Canterbury situated west of Rangiora. In 2004 local artist Roddy Kidd decorated the side of the Oxford Butchery with this expansive mural depicting historical images of the town and surrounding land. Roddy has also contributed murals at the Oxford Museum as well as drawing weekly cartoons for the Oxford Workingmens Club.

This mural on the water tank at Raglan in the Waikato was originally painted in the late 1980's by resident artist Marizio Sarzini. Over the years the paint work faded until in 1999 another local artist, Christian Higgins, along with Pita Mataira and Nick Puklowski of the Raglan Community Arts Council were given the greenlight by the community to repaint the sizable mural. The weather and time have not been kind even to the repaired mural as it looks like a new refresh is now needed.

Flying pigs and cartoon oyster feature on this bus shelter at Oyster Bay, near Portobello, on the Otago Peninsula. Several of the John Noakes bus shelters had deteriorated over time so local artist Jemima Pedro was given the task to update them with a new coat of paint, she completed the work on this one in 2013.

This sculpture called Young Nick depicts Nicholas Young who was a cabin boy aboard the Endeavour on its first voyage of discovery around the pacific in 1769. Nicholas Young, just 11 years old at the time, was credited with the first sighting of New Zealand at about 2pm on October 6, 1769. The sculpture, located at Waikanae was created by Frank Szirmay in 1969 as part of the Cook Bicentenary Celebrations.

This Kiwirail shed on Ensors Rd in Christchurch was painted by New Zealand artist Ira Mitchell @artbyira. Painted in 2019 this is a large scale reproduction of an earlier work by Ira called Sumner Beach. The photo kindly sent in by Sam and Paul Corliss.

This massive carving can be found at the intersection of Elliott and Church Streets in Opotiki. Craved by Heke Collier the pou depicts the development of the Opotiki town and district with many intricately carved icons of native and introduced plants and animals from Moa to pheasant. The main theme of the carving is the introduction of agriculture, horticulture and trading to the area.

Hine Ora was sculpted from a piece of marble by Bodhi Vincent during the Kawatiri Sculpture Symposium in 2016. The finished work can be found on Palmerston St in Westport outside the Westport Municipal Chambers.

Aucklands North Shore suburb of Birkenhead is home to a number of painted electrical transformers all the work of Claire Rye (@claireryeart) with this one covered in native birds and featuring a beautiful Kotare (Sacred Kingfisher).

Talented Blenheim artist Lilah Bowers created a delightful painting of a Monarch butterfly in a field of daisies. Her painting can be found on this @chorusnz cabinet along Maxwell Rd in Blenheim.

Nga Puna Wai Whakapapa (The Heritage Fountain) was designed by Napier artist Paratene Matchitt in 1996 having been commissioned by the Napier City Council. Features of the fountain include, at the base, a cluster of gannets and below them a school of fish, while nearer the top of the sculpture a series of shapes allude to the position of Napier near to the sea but in the shadow of the ranges that surrounded Hawkes Bay.
