Early 2019 saw Pauly Be (Paul Bradley) create this eye catching mural on the side wall of the @teaandhappinessnz building on the corner of Amokura St and Fairy Springs Rd in Rotorua. The theme of the mural is the relationship between us, the food we eat and the environment that sustains us.

To many the monlithic pyramid in Wellington's Civic Square may look out of place but Te Aho a Maui was designed by Rewi Thompson as a maunga split in two providing a reimagining of the story of Aotearoa's creation.

The Spirit of Surfing The Spirit of Surfing

This 100 year commemmorative sculpture in the form of a surfboard recognises the visit of Duke Paoa Kahanamoku the world-reknowned Hawaiian surf rider and Olympic Gold Medal swimmer to New Brighton Beach in 1915. It was here that Duke gave his first New Zealand demonstration of surf riding. The sculpture can be found outside the New Brighton Library. Thanks to Sam and Paul Corliss for the photo.

Birds of Peace Birds of Peace

This sculpture found outside the Richmond office of the @tasmandistrictcouncil is called Birds of Peace (Nga Manu Rangimarie). Created in Takaka marble of Golden Bay sculptor Lorraine Polglase the sculpture was designed to commemorate 50 years since the end of World War II and shows the Tasman regions committment to peace.

We are all in the Same Waka is a collaborative effort from Auckland based illustrator Rebecca Ter Borg and self taught typographic sign-writer Nigel Roberts (Dagar). The murals was created for the Panagseed Sea Walls Tairawhiti festival held in 2018 to highlight the need for conservation of our planets oceans.

Gisborne Train Gisborne Train

The first steam locomotive to be built in the NZR workshop at Hillside in Dunedin was Wa165. The engine was put into service in March 1898 and saw operations in Wellington, Palmerston North, Gisborne and Napier until it was withdrawn from service in 1959. In October 1985 the Gisborne City Vintage Railway Society began restoration of the locomotive with the aim of turning the engine into a local tourist attraction. The job took nearly 14 years but on the 29th November 1999 Wa165 was back on the rails again for its first test run. The engine nows runs on special occasions or can be booked for group excursions. This mural on the outside wall of the Gisborne City Vintage Railway on Customhouse St shows the old train in all its glory.

This is a replacement mural for the original Bullock Team mural painted by Ken Yound in 1994. This new mural was painted by Crystal Barbre with the same theme showing workers transporting kauri logs using a team of bullocks to do the heavy hauling. Alongside the railway tracks near the intersection of state highways 24 and 27 is this painted cabinet by Jeremy Shirley. The organic design and colour shades makes this an attractive addition to the street scape of Matamata.

This @chorusnz cabinet on Aerodrome Road in Mount Maunganui was painted by artist Jimmy Robertson. Jimmy has put a lot of effort into making his painting look like an underwater selfie and showing the importance of the sea to local life in Mount Maunganui.

No More Cash Crays was painted by jr_the_free to highlight the plight of the New Zealand koura. Over fishing of our kaimoana, the majority of which is for export and profit, is unsustainable in the long term. The need to preserve our natural resources for future generations far outweighs the need to create cash now.

Seascape is another expansive mural by Ellen Coup, this one covering a low wall on Oriental Parade in Wellington seperating traffic from pedestrians. Ngati Paoa Seating Ngati Paoa Seating

This seating sculpture was created by Puhi Thompson in 2017, it can be found on the seaward side of Victoria Park in the Auckland CBD. The sculpture recognises the relationship that the Ngati Paoa people have with the area in particular the Waitemata harbour. This connection is evident in the fish design embeded in the ground at the front of and in the base of the the seat symolising the importance of the harbour as a source of food and a means of travel.

Taurapa Taurapa

The sculpture Taurapa consists of three boulders resting on an upright sandstone slab. The sculpture was created by Chris Booth in 1997 and can be found along the banks of the Avon river in Christchurch. Taking the shape of the stern post of a waka the sculpture reminds viewers of the history of the area, of a time when waka (Maori canoes) were used as transportation along the river to the Otautahi Pa. A popular but dangerous attraction in the Bay of Plenty is the active volcano off the coast of Whakatane. The menacing beauty of Whakaari (or White Island) is best seen from above allowing the full breadth of the island can be taken in from a safe distance.

Secombe Park is a large recreational space between Three and Four Mile Bays in Taupo. With access to the lake, ample space to exercise the dog and spots to have a picnic it is a very scenic reserve for Taupo residents to enjoy made all the better by this nice mural on the public facility painted by local artist Gary Bennett.

Colin Hoare is a self taught portrait artist based in Palmerston North. A number of his painted portraits can be found in Moxies Cafe on Main St where the owners have commissioned him to paint images of famous visitors to the cafe. Fusing Lines Fusing Lines Fusing Lines

This mural was created in 2016 by students at One Tree Hill College. Inspired by the Singing Caves, ancient volcanic caves at Waiatarua (the site of the Ellerslie Reace Course) which was the source of a song created by the paassage of wind through the caves. On the right side of the mural feminine forms are seen singing into the tunnel, while the left side shows a pattern showing the development of technology and its connection to the train tunnel.

The Last Island The Last Island

In 2017 Swiss artist Onur visited New Zealand to paint this mural for the Napier Sea Walls festival. The Last Island shows a post-apocalypic world where global warming has melted the polar ice caps leaving this one last iceberg, though that too will soon be consigned to history.

Local Bay of Plenty artist Alex McLeod makes a humorous environmental statement on the @chorus cabinet located in Tauranga. If not discarded responsibly these little sushi fish can end up in our oceans and may one day out number the real fish in the sea.

This wonderfully decorated toilet block can be found on the Esplande in the heart of Kaikoura. Every aspect of life in the seaside tourist hotspot is represented in detail including diving for crayfish, whale watching, kayaking and the resident seal colony. Urban Jungle Urban Jungle

Urban Jungle by Chris Finlayson is a 180sqm mural spanning four floors of a building on Trafalgar St in Nelson. The mural has nature taking over the concrete structure with a native bush scene complete with waterfall and a few hidden native birds for the keen bird lovers to try and spot.
