Dunedin artist Jemima Pedro @jemimapedroartist has been responsible for helping to restore some of the 65 bus shelter murals of the late Joan Noakes found around Dunedin. She has of course contributed a few of her own, this example of her work can be found along the coast south of Dunedin on the corner of Brighton and Creamery Roads at Ocean View. Pou Whenua Pou Whenua Pou Whenua Te Ahi Kaa

This six-metre high pou whenua was carved by Ngai Tahu master carver Riki Manuel. Te Ahi Kaa, known affectionately as the pou pou, was carved from a totara log that was donated by a west coast farmer, it was created as part of the 1990 commemorations of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi and was erected in Victoria Square, Christchurch in 1994. The pou features Ranginui and Papatuanuku (the sky father and the earth mother, also known as Raki and Papa) representing the beginning of creation and the connection to the peoples of Otautahi, a pou designed to be touched and experienced. Te Aroha

On this @chorusnz cabinet in the Waikato town of Te Aroha artist Dallas Phillips has interpreted the legend of how Te Aroha got its name by representing the mountain as a goddess, her hair flowing as a river down the mountain side and out into the dark night sky while the warrior Kahu-mata-momoe gazes upon her beauty.

Khandallah Community Gardens

The Khandallah Community Garden (@KhandallahCommunityGardens) has been run by a group of volunteers for over five years creating a space for the community to gather, enjoy a bit of manual labour and reap the profits of fresh fruits and vegetables. Over the years a number of fruit trees have been planted, some raised vegetable gardens constructed and the installation of a small lending library which includes books and packets of harvested seeds. The utility boxes right outside the gardens which include a @chorus cabinet and electrical cabinet were painted by Ellen Coup in 2015 to draw attention to the gardens and to blend these otherwise bland structures into the greenery of the gardens. Phar Lap Raceway Phar Lap Raceway Phar Lap Raceway

The statue of legendary Australasian race horse Phar Lap was unveiled at the Washdyke Racecourse, Timaru in 2009. The statue, in place not far from the paddock where he was born, shows the horse at full stride with jockey Jim Pike on board for the ride. As jockey Jim rode Phar Lap in 27 of his 37 wins out of 51 starts including the 1930 Melbourne Cup. The life-sized sculpture is the work of Joanne Sullivan. Photos thanks to Sam and Paul Corliss

Phar Lap Raceway Phar Lap Raceway Manukau Millennium Sculpture

The Manukau Millenium Sculpture, otherwise known as He Taonga Hiranga Whakanui Whanau, has had a makeover. The sculpture was originally stone grey but has recently been painted green and blue with the motifs carved into the reverse side given different colours. The sculpture, which represents the family unit, was created by Dr Richard Shortland Cooper for the millennial celebrations in 2000. Made from reinforced concrete the form on the left side includes the handprints of the sculptors children.

Great Oaks

Growth through Learning, the motto of Drury School, is represented in this @chorusnz cabinet painted by year 8 students from the school. A large oak tree once stood within the grounds of the school, the tree is remembered in the imagery on the cabinet and its title Great Oaks from Little Acorns Grow.

Totara Grove

In 2016 the students of Opononi Area School were given the opportunity to paint a mural consisting of 11 panels for the Totara Grove Playcentre in Whangarei. Each panel was themed for a different culture to represent the diverse cultural backgrounds of the families who attend the playcentre. Red Portrait Peri Kohu

For the 2017 Street Print Mauao festival, held in Mt Maunganui, Montreal based mural artist Kevin Ledo created this portrait of Peri Kohu, Ngaitamarawaho Kaumatua and deputy chairman of the Otamataha Trust.

The @TitahiBayHorticulturalSociety is made up of a group of fun loving like minded people who enjoy all aspects of gardening including workshops, garden visits and entertaining guest speakers at their meetings. The society was established in 1959 and continues to thrive 50 years later holding monthly meetings and annual events such as the Spring Flower Show. In 2017 the Society commissioned Wellington artist Ellen Coup to decorate a dull electrical transformer near the beach with this creative painting that transforms the drab cabinet into a pseudo boat shed. Centenary Stamp

Blown up to a large scale this mural of a 1940s New Zealand commerative stamp pictures the landing of the main body of immigrants on Petone Beach on Jan 22nd 1840. Golden Bay Map

This mural depicting a map of Golden Map was painted by Monique Richards in 2006. The mural, presented in the style of a treasure map, celebrates the discovery of the bay by Abel Tasman in 1642 and includes several of the native bird and plant life to be found in the area. Peace Peace Peace

Peace by the late Llew Summers (1947-2019) is a scaled up version of a smaller work originally carved in wood presented here as a 2 tonne bronze sculpture. Three doves form a circle of birds in flight, a symbol of civic peace carved from the hands of a man with a pacifist background. Although most noted for his sculpture of the human form, the Christchuch born sculptor also created several large scale pieces exploring the shape and structure of wings, sometimes alone but in the case of Peace, attached to the three doves. The Secret Gathering

From the 2019 @boonfestival and the mind of Stephen Templer comes The Secret Gathering a wonderfully colourful fastasy vision of a late-night river side get-together. The artist, Stephen Templer, is a painter, illustrator and prop designer who is one of the team of freelance artists at @HoneyBadgerCreativeStudios in Wellington. His artwork has a distinctly New Orleans vibe as can be seen in elements of this mural.

This sculpture called 'Seed Growing, Becoming Stingray' was carved by Madelyne Gourdin during the Kawatiri Sculpture Symposium held in 2017. Carved from a piece of Serpentine Stone, so called due to its olive green colour and scaly appearance, this sculpture was created in the space of the two weeks the symposium was held over. Born in France Madelyne Gourdin travelled to New Zealand in 2015 and fell in love with Jade carving. Partnering with fellow carver Nick Spicer Balme, she set up Kawakawa Stone (www.kawakawastone.nz) where she brings her own unique style to New Zealand Jade carving.

Immortal Child

Immortal Child was produced for the 2019 @BoonStreetArt festival held in the Hamilton CBD. This mural, which is the creation of Ka-Lani Lanusi, is located along Anglesea St on the rear wall of the @farmers store.

Compared to the rest of Auckland the North Shore has comparatively less public art, a situation that @aresartifex is making progress in addressing. This shipping container found along Beach Haven road has been enlivened with his signature style.

Fern

The Aspiring Arts and Culture Trust was created in 2000 by then mayor Warren Cooper in order to purchase and commission public artworks for the Queenstown Lakes District Council. Over the years several major works have been installed including Fern by renowned New Zealand sculptor Paul Dibble. The 2.6 metre high bronze sculpture was purchased in 2007 and was installed in Queenstown Gardens in 2009, you can find this sculpture just over a footbridge as you enter the gardens from Marine Parade.

Nikau Forest

This stylised Nikau Forest mural was created by Wellington artist Ellen Coup. Painted for a private residence on Rhodes St in Newtown, Wellington look for the mural on the outside wall facing Daniell St. The mural creates a resplendent forest setting in the middle of suburbia that entices passersby to step through into calm and peaceful surroundings.

Pekapeka

Rora St in Te Kuiti is home to this sculpture of a pekapeka (bat) chasing down some moths. This piece was sculpted and cast in bronze in the year 2000 by sculptor and foundryman Jonathan Campbell (www.lostwax.co.nz). Jonathan has been creating bronze sculptures since 1992 when he started his business 'Created and Cast Bronze' in the western hills of Lower Hutt and over the years, along with his own artworks, has helped to bring to life major works from artists such as Francis Upritchard and Brigitte Wuest.

More toilet block art! While not your usual canvas as public facilities are often a target for vandals and anti-social tagging it is worthwhile to decorate these spaces. We hope one day all toilet blocks will be painted with bright, interesting murals, it will certainly make them easy to spot when on an outing. Vaka 'A Hina

Vaka 'A Hina (the vessel of Hina) is a 16m tall sculpture by Tongan artist Semisi Fetokai Potauaine. The sculpture was installed at the northern end of Rauora Park in Christchurch as part of the SCAPE 2019 public art season and selected to become a permanent sculpture in the city. The name Hina can be found in many polynesian cultures as a powerful goddess, in Tongan folklore she lives on the moon and travels back and forth to the earth in a vaka (canoe). In this tall sculpture that touches both earth and sky the artist conveys this sense of travel from the earth into the heavens. Photo thanks to Sam and Paul Corliss

Mt Albert Community Centre

This un-named artwork on the wall outside the Mt Albert Community and Recreation Centre was created in 2009 by Zoe Nash. The multi-panel artwork is made up of imagery that speaks of both the community and history of Mt Albert, containing historic buildings such as Alberton and Ferndale alongside symbols from the various cultures that make up the Mt Albert community. Look closely at the artwork to find images of, amongst others, Japanese and Chinese lanterns, pacific flora and fauna, the rocketship from Rocket Park as well as the nearby Tree sculpture by Caroline Rothwell, all connected by the rail line that runs through and connects the suburb to the rest of Auckland.
