Covered in 360 spinning metal pinwheels Fanfare, by renowned New Zealand artist Neil Dawson CNZM, is a gateway art installation on the northern approach to the city of Christchurch. Standing at 25 metres the artwork is an impressive structure that can be illuminated in a spectrum of colours at night but, as New Zealands largest sculpture, is still an imposing sight during daylight hours. The sculpture was originally commissioned by the city of Sydney as a centre piece of the 2005 new year celebrations where it was suspended from Sydney Harbour Bridge after which it was gifted to the people of Christchurch by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore. Thanks to the efforts of SCAPE Public Art as well as funding from CreativeNZ the sculpture was successfully installed just north of the city in June 2015. Unveiled in March 2019 this 25 metre long mural created by the Kakano Youth Arts Collective presents in graphical form the history of West Auckland. Detailed across five panels the mural shows the industry, agriculture and beauty of the western suburbs, the waitakere ranges and west coast landscape. Icons of west Auckland history represented on the mural include the Crown Lynn pottery which operated in New Lynn from 1925 to 1989, the Corbans Wines whose first vintage was produced in 1908 and of course the logging of kauri in the Waitakere Ranges. The pouwhenua at iconic Karekare beach is shown in one end panel alongside the once common but now extinct Huia while the panel at the opposite end showcases Kitekite falls just inland from Piha. You can find this mural in the carpark of Hendersons Mill Cottage, home to the West Auckland Historical Society.

Many of the Hamilton bus stops painted by Jeremy Shirley feature New Zealand native birds, this bus stop shelter found on Masters Ave in Hamilton East is a departure from that theme. Passengers at this stop are entertained with a school of Kaparu (John Dory) while they wait for the inevitable three buses to turn up at the same time.

Mikaere Gardiner, aka Eno, is a nationally-recognised New Zealand artist who began his career brightening up the streets of New Plymouth with graffiti artworks. While his earlier work was unsanctioned and seen by the local council as vandalism, his style and creativity was appreciated by the public in general and building owners soon began to commission large murals from him. This mural on King St near Puke Ariki exhibits characteristics of his early works, with a limited colour palette and whimsical design.

We photographed this mural by Jonny 4Higher a few months ago on a dreary winters day. At the time the trees planted in front were taller than the building and partly obscured the mural. Going back recently to get a better photo and discovered the big trees have been removed and replaced with some saplings, this brightens the mural up but the bigger trees gave the impression the forest extended into the courtyard. Find this mural off Teed street in Newmarket.

The sayings 'Pigs Might Fly' and 'Fish Ride Bikes' are interchangable in their meaning of an event unlikely to happen. Bruce Greig encapsulates the saying beautifully on this @chorusnz cabinet found on St Martins Rd in Christchurch. But then one wonders if Bruce was just a fan of the American hip hop duo 'The Cool Kids' and their debut studio album which was titled 'Fish Ride Bicycles'. The Awataha Greenway project has already started, to raise public awareness of the program this mural was created by @jeremyartanddesign on a wall in the Northcote shopping centre.

The Orakei Community Centre is one of Auckland Councils event spaces, it has rooms available for hire that cater for a range of activities though perhaps not as broad as this mural by Doug Ford suggests. The imagery in the mural does however reflect the community and surroundings of the wider Orakei area with a mix of peoples, wildlife and landmarks.
