Tapapakanga

At the entrance to Tapakanga Regional Park east of Auckland stand these two hand carved pou. One unusual feature of the pou is the image of James Ashby carrying an axe. James and his wife Rebecca were the former (European) owners of the land who were said to have a unique business relationship with the local Maori chief for the harvesting and sale of timber from the area. Unfortunately we do not know the carver(s) who create these pou so if anyone has more information please let us know in a comment or personal message.

DEOW

This mural painted for the Bradley Lane 2017 event comes from Invercargill graffiti artist DEOW who describes himself as 'The worlds most southern graf artist'. The mural is larger than this one photo but as it has been painted in a narrow alleyway getting it all into one frame was impossible. We guess you will just have to visit Glen Innes to see it in all its glory.

Kaka

C'mon New Zealand, we need to move these art festivals out of the back alleys and onto the main street so that we can all see these glorious murals without the bins and cars parked in front (and so we can get some better photos!). These beautiful Kaka were painted by Jeremy Shirley for Taupo's Graffiato in 2015 and can be found down service lane 3. Kaka are simply wonderful birds, strong yet curious and often described as cheeky. There is a good population on Great Barrier Island but they are starting to expand onto other islands in the Hauraki Gulf.
