llama

In Wellsford, overlooking the intersection where SH16 meets SH1, stand a pair of metal Llama. The llama were created by Rustic Twist and have stood in this spot watching the traffic flow through the town since 2005.

Swirl

Swirl (2011) by Neville Parker depicts a natural event in the marine environment, the coming together of a community of fish to feed. This sculpture can be found along the Whangarei town basin sculpture trail.

Tuturiwhatu Pukunui

Here we are at the 500th mural added to our map. The mural depicts a Tuturiwhatu Pukunui (NZ Dotterl) and was painted by Charles & Janine Williams at Mt Maunganui in December 2017. Endemic to NZ the Tuturiwhatu Pukunui numbers just 1,700 birds, or make that 1,702 as we had 2 chicks hatch at our local reserve which we cared for and monitored until they fledged.

That farmer is gonna rue the day he left the keys in the Kombi, the whole farm is off for a surf. Road to Raglan is by Brent Larsen, found along Whatawhata Rd opposite the Dinsdale shopping centre.

Grey Lynn Bell Jar

Always enjoy finding a new Paul Walsh painted cabinet and this one doesn't disappoint. Look for this one on Surrey Cres in Grey Lynn. This cabinet used to have a painting of a unicyclist by Doug Ford until it was taken out by a wayward car in 2017, we do hope Paul's work doesn't suffer the same fate.

Beck Wheeler

Bold, bright colours and surreal cartoon characters typify the artistic style of Beck Wheeler. An illustrator and author of childrens books and of course mural artist, Beck was responsible for this wonderful creation on Heuheu St in Taupo painted for the 2015 Graffiato event.

Moa and Kiwi

We need to say a huge thank you to Paul Corliss and his son Sam for sending us a good number of mural photos from around Christchurch. This is the first of many that will be added to the map over time. The mural of a Kiwi and Moa bones is by ROA a street artist from Belgium known for his large scale paintings of birds and animals native to the local area. The mural was painted for the RISE street art festival held in Christchurch in 2014 and can be found on the side of the Canterbury Museum.

BMD

This mural by BMD got away from us. We took this photo some time ago but always intended going back to get a shot with no cars in the frame...and now, sadly, the wall has been demolished, ouch. So now you can't see the mural in person anymore but you can still find the virtual version on our map. Look for Lincoln St in Ponsonby to find the marker.

Bradley Lane

This mural by Elliot Francis Stewart is already on our map (www.outdoorart.nz) located in Bradley Lane, Glen Innes. However we have swapped out the photo with this new image (no cars, no rubbish, just mural, yay!).

Wave and Waka

In Whangarei, Wave and Waka by Chris Booth and Te Warihi Hetaraka is made from carved and suspended stone. Designed as a landmark to welcome visitors arriving by sea the sculpture rises from the Hatea River the waka engulfed by a massive wave form.

Nga Whetau o Matariki

The creation of 'Nga Whetau o Matariki' was a collaboration by graffiti artist Dallas Mihinui (mural design and spray painting) and school children from seven North Waikato primary schools (production of the seven large stars). The mural is located on Jesmond street in Ngaruawahia.

Turtle

Turtle, by Sator, can be located in Phoenix Lane, Mt Maunganui. Born and raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Sators works are a mixture of abstract and real forms that explore different dimensions and realities to bring the viewer closer to a comprehension of the work.

Mica Still

Our second mural from Napier comes courtesy of Denise Donovan. Painted in 2016 for the Napier Sea Walls festival by Mica Still Artist. Mica has painted a large number of murals around the country, this is just the 5th that we have featured here (Mica Still). Most of her murals feature vibrant colours with wolves and tigers but for the sea walls aquatic life is the focus.

No'o Fakataha

This photo was sent in to us by Sam and Paul Corliss, taken in October 2014. No'o Fakataha (which translates as bound together) was painted by Tongan artist Benjamin Work. Now a piece of history as the graffiti wall where the mural was located (Alfred St and Fitzgerald Ave in Christchurch) has now been over-painted with new street art.

Reo

Outside the Auckland Central Library is the sculptural seat Reo, the word by itself just means 'language' for most kiwis it represents the Maori language. Next time you visit the library look closely at the letter O, inscribed around the edge is the text of Robert Sullivans poem Kawe Reo which begins 'Voice carries us from the foot of Rangipuke / Sky Hill / Albert Park to the Wai Horotiu stream...'

Thames

On a large wall at the rear of the Thames Hospital is this mural painted by retired general surgeon Paul Silvester. A photo of this mural was originally sent in to us by Thames historian and author Althea Barker. We recently visited Thames to take a high res photo of the mural which shows the landmarks and features of Thames in a very typographical style. Kaitiaki Manu

Sculpture #293 on our map (www.outdoorart.nz) is Kaitiaki Manu by Rex O'Brien. The sculpture featuring a kukupa made from Maungatepere basalt was the 2016 winning entry at the Whangarei Sculpture Symposium. Purchased by the Whangarei District Council and gifted to the public the sculpture can be found at the Whangarei Art Park down at the town basin. Paradox

This magnificent mutli-storied mural, the creation of Jacobyikes. was painted for the 2017 Paradox Tauranga Street Art Festival. Jacob is a freelance graphic artist based out of Christchurch who has created a wide range of dramatic large scale murals as well as illustrations and paintings. Look for this mural on Spring St, downtown Tauranga.

Papatoetoe Garden Paradise

Papatoetoe Garden Paradise was painted by Chris Gould. This utility box was one of five decorated in 2017 through the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust competition. The box can be found on Park Avenue in Papatoetoe.

Waiheke Pou Whakara

On a knoll in the grounds of the Waiheke Library stands Waiheke Pou Whakara made up of three pou named Tikapa, Putiki o Kahu and Piritaha. Chief carver Chris Bailey supervised the carving of the three pou completing the design and carving of the work with help from Nico Otero, Lucas Thompson and Hemi Thompson. Each of the pou is oriented to an important landmark, Tikapa (Gannet Rock), Rangihoua and Piritahi Marae together the pou represent the past, present and future.

Horse

This is the first artwork from Te Aroha added to our map (www.outdoorart.nz). The sculpture was created by Adrian Worsley Gallery and was designed to be functional as well as sculptural, a bike rack being incorporated into the design. The sculpture is installed on the corner of Whitaker St and Lawrence Ave and is a wonderful addition to the town centre. We will be adding more from Adrian and from Te Aroha in the coming days.

Erin Forsyth

You owe yourself a trip to downtown Auckland, wander through Wynyard Quarter and on Daldy Street you will find this absolutely mesmerizing new mural by Erin Forsyth. The amount of detail in this work is astounding, each time you look you will find more characters and fauna to grab your attention. Spirit

More Morrinsville cows added to the map, this one is 'Spirit' by Paul Bradley, otherwise known as Paul Be Artist. Paul describes himself as a muralist, painter, and performer of live art but it is just his murals that we feature on our website. Though we have just two artworks by Paul so far we have added a page to display these works as we know there will be more to come, check them out at Paul Bradley
