Tieke

Jacob Chrisohoou has a number of painted utility boxes around the suburbs of Rotorua. This is the second we have featured on the map, his painting of a Tieke (or Saddleback).

Ruru

Is it possible to have too many native bird murals? We don't think so! This is a Ruru (or Morepork) painted by Jeremy Shirley on a wall just off Karangahape Road in Auckland. Marker number 860 on the map.

Tongue of the Dog

A gift to Hamilton City by philanthropic arts group Mesh Sculpture Hamilton, Tongue of the Dog by Michael Parekowhai stands 8m high with the 'tongue' pouring forth from the sculpture from 4.5m up into a shallow pool below. The sculpture can be found outside the entrance to the Waikato Museum.

Henderson Valley Road

We want to check this for accuracy. We believe the artist for this painted transformer is Cliff Uepa but as there is no signature on the artwork we are not 100% sure. If anyone knows for certain please drop us a message.

Reconciliation Bridge

Who knew you could turn a bridge into a sculpture! Reconciliation Bridge over the Opanuku Stream is by Neil Miller and allows the viewer to move through the sculpture and enjoy the artwork from different perspectives.

Emperor Penguins

Finally got a chance to visit this wall outside a private residence on Albany Highway. This cool mural of Emperor Penguins is by Paul Walsh. Paul has original artwork for sale on his website at Paul Walsh or you can organise a unique mural for your own home.

B J Ball building

In all our years in Auckland we must have literally driven passed this mural on the B J Ball building a thousand times but never really noticed it. The mural was designed in 1959 by Milan Mrkusich who is recognised as one of New Zealand highly respected abstract artists. Made from thousands of glass and ceramic tiles it is seen as a piece of Aucklands artistic heritage.

The grounds of the TSB Bank Wallace Art Centre are home to a collection of publicly accessible sculptures. Void II by Ramon Robertson is from a series of artworks that explore human interaction with the urban environment.

Port Fitzroy

Monique Endt sent us this mural she has painted at Port Fitzroy on Great Barrier Island. As she could not supply the exact GPS co-ordinates the location on our map is the 'general' area. It is a huge mural so if you are visiting Port Fitzroy we are sure you won't be able to miss it, and when you find it maybe you could send in the accurate location.

Hairy Maclary

The Hairy Maclary sculpture by Brigitte Wuest on Tauranga's downtown waterfront brings to life the characters of Dame Lynley Dodd from her series of children's picture books 32 years after Hairy Maclary was first introduced to New Zealand children.

City Parks

A smashing mural by Louis Statham painted on the side of the City Parks building in Onehunga. This is part of a much larger mural showing the Auckland Domain with the War Memorial Museum, duck pond and the Band Rotunda.

Pupuke to the Sea

Pupuke to the Sea is by Jeff Thomson. Jeff is best known for his corrugated iron kiwiana sculptures (his corrugated iron HQ Holden Stationwagon is on permanent display at Te Papa). Here he uses steel panels painted with images of Auckland's North Shore centering aroiund Lake Pupuke and the Takapuna shoreline.

A beautifully painted Tui on a utility box in Takanini. While we love finding this kind of art on our streets we also want to give credit to the artists here and on our website. In this case there seems to be no signature so if anyone can help out with the artists name please drop us a line.

Mountain Fountain

Most Aucklanders (especially the skateboarders among us) would be familiar with Mountain Fountain by Terry Stringer as it once stood prominently in Aotea Square. The redevelopment of the square in 2008 saw it put into storage however it later found a new home outside the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell. Not quite as popular a place for the skateboarders though.

Hurstmere Green

Made from basalt this piece in Hurstmere Green, Takapuna by Brett Graham recounts the myth surrounding the creation of Lake Pupuke and Rangitoto. The artwork is made up of several pieces, the basalt wall tells the tale while two other pieces show Rangitoto and Lake Pupuke in relief form, the depression of Lake Pupuke also acts as a water fountain.

Rongo

Created by master carver Whare Thompson in Hinuera stone Rongo is the protector of crops and provider of abundant harvest. He can be found on the banks of the Opanuku Stream in west Auckland. Updated the map with a better photo used with kind permission of the artist.

Waiake

A Maori legend tells the tale of the creation of the Tor at Waiake. Moeora a beautiful young girl would sit on the edge of the cliff at Waiake singing with the Tuis until one day the cliff gave way beneath her causing her to fall to her death on the rocks below. A mural at the Torbay shopping centre by Johnny Mulvay incorporates this legend as well as children's drawings and images of the bay from the 19th century.

Te Pumanawa o Te Whenua - Beat Connection

On the grass outside the Claudelands Arena in East Hamilton stands Te Pumanawa o Te Whenua - Beat Connection by Seung Yul Oh. The design of the sculpture resembles a heart beat graph and represents the role the arena plays as the life and centre of many community activities.

Marker #880 on the map is this mural titled Keeping Your Head Above Water by Mica Still. You will need to explore the back alleyways of Mt Maunganui to find the mural but don't worry, you will find a few other fantastic murals along the way.

Maungarei Eavesdrop

This is Maungarei Eavesdrop by Denis O'Connor, four bluestone basalt boulders recovered from the Mt Wellington Quarry. A short poem has been sandblasted into the stone and reads, “It is just that my feet are cold and that of my class at school I remember thirty-two names and that I feel the sunshine when you touch me and that unspeakable colours of fish swimming the sea by my bed.”. The letters of the poem form a continuous ribbon from boulder to boulder evenly spaced and without punctuation. The sculpture comments on the desecration of one of Auckland's volcanic maunga.

Manukau Supa Centre

Another mural (well two actually) that needs a slidehow because a single shot can't capture it all. Painted by students from the Faculty of Creative Arts, MIT with assistance from The Good, The Bad an independent, artist-run gallery in Tāmaki, East Auckland. Can be seen in the walkways at the Manukau Supa Centre.

The Birth of Venus

On the side of Harrington House in Tauranga is Owen Dippie's rendition of The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. The larger than life mural is 27 metres tall and spans seven stories.

Tiberius the Titirangi Mouse

Update a marker on the map to give credit to the artist. This box was painted by Edith Diggle from the 1969 children's book 'Tiberius the Titirangi Mouse' by Patricia Ross and original illustrator Cathy Penetito. Edith became the illustrator on the 2015 follow up book 'Tiberius the Titirangi Mouse has more adventures'.

On a specially created wall along the Northwest cycleway heading toward Te Atatu but just before the Whau River bridge is this mural of a Taniwha designed by Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki carver Reuben Kirkwood.

Little Bull

Little Bull by Molly Macalister was the winning entry in a competition organised by the Hamilton Jaycee Incorporated in February 1967 to commemorate the 1964 centennial of the city of Hamilton.

Without any nearby mountains, lakes or thermal pools Morrinsville needed a point of difference. So a Herd of Cows? painted by local, and invited, artists moo-ved into town. This is Kiwiana, cow #9, painted by Aaron Smith.

Also from Paeroa is this older mural outside the Paeroa Museum. Painted in 1994 by local artist Cassandra Crowe from an old photograph showing a scene at the Junction Wharf in Paeroa before 1900.

Orewa

In 2009 visiting Japanese pop artist Jun Arita lent a hand to beautify the streets of Orewa. Hand painting the transformer took a few months of on and off work but the paints used have stood the test of time.

Sir Howard Morrison OBE

Marker number 900 on the map is this piece of cabinet art on Rimu St, Rotorua. The painting by Chris Newman celebrates one of Rotorua's great sons, entertainer Sir Howard Morrison OBE.

Kakano Youth Arts Collective is a group of young people in West Auckland mentored by professional artists and tutors from Unitec. Together they have been beautifying Henderson and New Lynn with some colourful murals. This mural can be found in Catherine Plaza at West City.

Updated our information for Regan Gentry. This mural is called 'Learning Your Stripes' and depicts the military ribbons that decorate service medals in the sequence of the campaigns in which New Zealand military groups have served. It can be found in Papatoetoe.

Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton

The city of Hamilton was named after Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton. A captain in the Royal Navy Hamilton was sent to New Zealand in 1863 during the New Zealand Wars, he died in 1864 after receiving a head wound at the Battle of Gate Pa. This sculpture of Captain Hamilton stands in Civic Square outside the Hamilton City Council buildings.

The Pioneer, Maui’s bird and the Earthly Star

The Pioneer, Maui’s bird and the Earthly Star by Sean Crawford. The sculpture is made from laser cut steel patterns formed into the shape of three sheep. The pattern of the white sheep is the Clematis flower (Pauwananga), the black sheep is made from Tieke (saddleback) while the pattern for the silver sheep is the monoplane built by New Zealand's first aviator Richard Pearse.
