A Tribute to Murray Ball

On the 12th of March New Zealand lost a great and well loved personality. This is a touching tribute to Murray Ball by Auckland artist Paul Walsh.

Wayfinder Pou

Wayfinder Pou by Ted Ngataki stands overlooking the newly formed onehunga foreshore at Taumanu reserve. The pou is made up of intricately carved panels that include images of the mother earth figure Papatūānuku but also reflect the surrounding features of land and buildings.

#untaggable

#untaggable by Gina Kiel is a collaboration with Audi NZ. It replaces an older piece by Charlotte Hawley in the same location on Brown St, Ponsonby. Out of interest if you use Google Street View you can find Charlotte in the process of painting her mural.

Above the entrance to the car park on Elizabeth St in Tauranga is Detail from Michelangelo's Pieta, another of the Larger Than Life murals by Owen Dippie.

Shavings

Shavings by Jamie Pickernell installed in 2015 represents wood shavings from a carvers chisel. This sculpture stands on Haupapa St in Jamie's hometown of Rotorua.

Old train station at Papatoetoe

The 23rd artwork by Louis Statham depicts the old train station at Papatoetoe. This mural can be viewed on the side of a building as the train passes by from Papatoetoe to Manukau.after the stop at Puhinui.

Oregon Ave

On this utility box in Avondale Cliff Uepa brings out the creepy crawlies, spiders, butterflies and weta to delight or fright the local kids on their walk to school.

Seek

Seek by Marte Szirmay was exhibited in the Auckland Botanic Gardens Sculpture in the Gardens exhibition in 2015. At the conclusion of the show the sculpture was added to the permanent collection at the gardens.

Captain Possum

Captain Possum is an earlier work from Paul Walsh painted in 2015 but is still in wonderful condition. This box can be found at the end of Sunset Road in Rotorua.

Jean Batten

Another utility box from Rotorua is another historical figure of famous New Zealanders heralding from the city. Jean Batten (1909-1982) is commemorated here by Chris Newman.

The 300th mural on our map is another of the bus shelter murals painted by Jeremy Shirley in Hamilton, this one on Dinsdale Rd.

Libre Hem

From what we can make out Libre Hem is a Mexican street art crew that recently toured downunder visiting New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia and East Timor. They painted this mural on their visit to Auckland, don't know if they traveled elsewhere in NZ so if you know of any more of their art on the streets please drop us a line.

Breathe

First exhibited at the Headland Sculpture on the Gulf, Waiheke Island in 2013, Breath by Nic Moon was added to the sculpture trail at the Auckland Airport in 2015.

This is Hinekokako by TECHS a street artist based in Hamilton. TECHS describes the work as the human personification of a Kokako bird.

This is 'Caught by the Dawn' by Christie Wright from Napier. Painted in 2015 on a wall in Bounty Lane, Mt Maunganui.

Onehunga Bay Reserve

A single image just would not do this art work by Jan Morrison any justice so we have put together a short slideshow. These painted tiles by Jan were originally installed on Queen St in 1991 but were removed in 2007 and later relocated to Onehunga Bay Reserve in 2010. From whale, to dolphin, Tarapunga, Tieke and Parekareka we think it is fantastic the tiles were given a new home and are a wonderful addition to a reserve gaining more popularity.

Matuku moana

On the northern wall of the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre is this mural by Charles and Janine Williams with Mike Tupaea. Charles and Janine specialize in painting native New Zealand birds, in this case a matuku moana (white-faced heron).

Ruru

Marker number 825 on the map is a painted utility box on Sunset Rd in Rotorua. Ruru is by Jacob Chrisohoou who has now been added as our 93rd featured artist on the website. Jacob Chrisohoou

The Entranceway to the World of Enlightenment

The Entranceway to the World of Enlightenment is by Lonnie Hutchinson and stands in the rose garden at the main gate of the Lake Domain Reserve, Hamilton. The sculpture is an interpretation of the mangopare (hammerhead shark) kowhaiwhai pattern.

Titipounamu

This is a recent work (number 36) by Paul Walsh and can be found in Ellerslie. Capturing two of New Zealands smallest birds, the Titipounamu on one side and Piwakawaka on the other.

Mater Misericordiae Hospital

Painted Utility Box Number 250 is by Louis Statham painted from a photo by Anne Corry. The original Mater Misericordiae Hospital (now Mercy Hospital) on Mountain Rd, Epsom was built in 1900.

Sculpture #225 can be seen from the port motorway as you drive up through Grafton Gully. Unfortunately we only know the name of this sculpture. If anyone has more information please let us know.

Sparrow

Added this mural from Cut Collective painted in 2014 on a Grey Lynn wall. Cut Collective was formed in 2006 as a group of five core artists Component, Enforce1, TrustMe, Peepshow and Ithink with others coming and going over the years.

Solace in the Wind

Solace in the Wind was created by Weta Workshop sculptor Max Patte and stands testament to the gale force winds often experienced on Wellingtons waterfront.

Whakaparirau

It was a rather dismal day when we photographed Whakaparirau (To Equip With Wings) by James Wright so we recently revisited the sculpture on a brighter day for a better shot. The sculpture is made from stainless steel, stands 5.5 metres tall and represents three set of wings or three birds in flight.

Nelson Mandala

Despite it being in an industrial area Ashworth Lane is worth a side trip for anyone visiting Mt Maunganui. Owen Dippie has created several large scale murals all within easy walking distance from each other. This one is of course Nelson Mandela. BTW this brings us up to 850 markers on the map!

Onehunga Underpass

Another artwork where the detail cannot be show with a single image. In the underpass from on SH20 from Onehunga Harbour Rd to Onehunga Mall this mural by Daniel Tippett transforms a darkened tunnel into a vibrant walkway worth a visit to admire th detail and breadth of subjects depicted by Daniel.

Auckland High Court

Above the entrance to the Auckland High Court is this sculpture by Jacob Manu Scott. From the plaque: The purple panel acknowledges the Ngati Whatua people, their rights to chieftainship over their lands, villages and treasures. The green panel acknowledges the Tainui peoples rights to chieftainship and management of their iwi. The red panel represents the Maori people and their rights to their perspective. The blue panel represents European as Tangata Whenua and acknowledges their responsibilities.

Huia

Another recent addition to Devonport, Aucklands North Shore artistic hotspot. This mural of the extinct Huia was painted earlier this year by Cinzah Seekayem. Use the map at www.outdoorart.nz to find its location, it is worth a visit as this mural and others nearby are more impressive in real life!
