Terry Stringer

English born Terry Stringer became a naturalised New Zealander in 1979. Before this however he studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland receiving his diploma in 1967. Stringers sculptures explore distortion as a means of displaying depth, to fully appreciate his artworks the viewer needs to physically move around the piece to understand the merger of the two and three dimensional elements. This is most evident in 'The World Grasped' on Broadway, Newmarket in Auckland. From one direction is seen the head of a boy resting on his hand in thought. From another this hand is seen to be plucking an apple. And from a third direction, this apple is the world supported on the shoulders of Atlas. In 2001 Stringer established Zealandia near Mahurangi West as both home a sculpture garden. He was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sculpture.
