Michael's outdoor sculptures have proven to be very polarizing as was the case when his powder-coated aluminium sculpture Atarangi was installed in 2013 outside Puke Ariki in New Plymouth. The 2.8-metre-high sculpture, being a reference to the Te Ataarangi system of Maori language teaching is an attractive and colourful feature in the outdoor space at the entrance to library, museum and visitor information centre. While at the time of its installation there may have been some negative feedback it remains a highly recognisable piece of art from a well known kiwi artist.
