Painted on a wall outside the Waihi Memorial Hall is Johnny Mulvay's mural Waihi Time Warp. Based on photographs of the town dating from around 1912 the mural shows several people in period costume along with one teenager in modern day clothes, complete with cellphone. Mulvay wrote a short poem specific to the mural to explain the scene in an amusing way, the poem reads; Somewhere between 1912 and now the heart of the world shifted and centred upon the Great Southern Ocean but all Ashley knew was a sudden unfamiliarity. Horses and carts were about Eeooo!! - streets of dirt!! Everyone wore retro and her cellphone didn't work... Our thanks goes to the volunteer researchers at the Waihi Arts Centre and Museum for locating information about the mural and contacting the artist on our behalf.
