John Edgar

Born in Auckland John Edgar has travelled extensively throughout the world to investigate and learn ancient and modern stone carving techniques, in particular through China, Taiwan and Korea. His sculptures are created in a process he maintains individual control over from carving, polishing and final installation. John has undertaken many prospecting trips to the South Island of New Zealand to source granite, basalt and other stone for his works to merge into a final product with other elements. For many pieces he first carves the base stone then inserts bands of other materials to form lines and crosses. The additional materials may vary from glass, metals or other stone such as sandstone from India or black jade from Australia. Over the years as his work, has been adapted in substance and style, John has conducted four nationally touring exhibitions starting in 1993 through until 2004. In 2009 John Edgar was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to art, in particular sculture.
