Jeff Thomson

Best known for his corrugated iron Kiwiana sculptures Jeff Thomson has become an icon of the Kiwi art scene. Jeff was born in Auckland and grew up on the North Shore, he studied at Westlake Boys where he received a merit in Fine Arts, he then furthered his studies at the Elam School of Fine Art at the Auckland University majoring in painting and printmaking. His initial works in sculpture were inspired by imagery of the Kiwi roadside and culminated in a series of corrugated iron letterboxes. From these beginnings he went on to create a large body of works using corrugated iron as the main medium. From animals and birds to cars and people there are few subjects that have not had the corrugated treatment. Perhaps his best known work is the HQ Holden Stationwagon on permanent display at Te Papa Tongarewa, the Museum of New Zealand, however a number of his sculptures grace our outdoor spaces around the country.
