Hautaha was one of a series of art works incorporated into the new Onehunga Community Centre and Library complex. Designed by Tongan artist Filipe Tohi. Hautaha or ‘coming together’ refers to Pacific Island lashing (lalava) traditionally used to bind boats and houses, “both of which are built to bring people together…its about binding people together too – all the cultures in Onehunga” (Tohi, 2004) The stainless steel sculpture has architectural elements, referencing industry in the area. The official unveiling of the sculpture took place on 21 February 2004.
